Well I've got two series to start off the suggestions. They would both fall under the fantasy section.

A Song of Ice and Fire by George RR Martin

A Game of Thrones (Book 1)
A Clash of Kings (Book 2)
A Storm of Swords (Book 3)
A Feast for Crows (Book 4)

... I talk about this series a lot here, due to the fact HBO just started filming for this series. But even if that wasn't the case I would mention it, love the series (sometimes hate...but that has more to due with Mr. Martin but thats another topic) and wish I had more people to discuss it with. Be warned its a long some what brutal (no romance or happy endings here) series, but well worth it.
